Indie Exclusive Frosted Teal Vinyl

The eleventh Death Cab for Cutie album, and the band's first for ANTI- after twenty-two years on Atlantic; they signed to the label in January 2026. John Congleton produced and engineered it over three weeks at Animal Rites, his studio in Los Angeles, with additional parts recorded remotely by the band in Seattle, Bellingham, Los Angeles and Portland. Congleton also produced Asphalt Meadows in 2022. Carlos de la Garza mixed and Matt Colton mastered.

Ben Gibbard wrote all the lyrics and composed the music except where the credits name Dave Depper, Nicholas Harmer or Zac Rae. He has described the record's governing image directly: "I see the tower existing on your emotional horizon. You don't always have to look at what's inside it, but it's a reminder that it happened. You know it's there. You have to face it." Asked whether it is a divorce record, he said people can take it that way, but that it is about compartmentalizing grief in order to get through the day rather than about the divorce itself.

The arrangements sit heavier than the band's recent work, and Gibbard has named Fugazi as the reference point: "The thing I love about those Fugazi records is there's just nowhere to hide in the arrangement. Everything in there is essential because there's only four voices." "Stone Over Water" was left off the band's own preferred running order until Congleton argued for it, and its original nine-minute krautrock outro was cut on his advice. "Riptides" was the first single, announced with the album in March 2026, followed by "Punching the Flowers" in April and "Stone Over Water" in June.

Eleven tracks, 38:34. The album reached number 12 on the Scottish Albums chart, number 20 on the German Rock & Metal chart and number 20 on the Irish Independent Albums chart, and holds a Metacritic score of 83 from 17 reviews.
