Black Vinyl, Single Jacket, 24×36 Inch Double-Sided Poster Insert

The standard black pressing of Creole Culture, in a single jacket with a twenty-four by thirty-six inch double-sided poster insert. Merge also issued an indies-exclusive Translucent Champagne Wave pressing; that is a different record with a different barcode, and the flexi disc that came with it is not part of this one.

Katalyst co-executive produced — the Inglewood collective founded by the drummer and producer Greg Paul. Richard on the work: "Collaborating with Katalyst on the album has been a natural extension of my artistic journey. Together, we're creating music that honors multiple genres while aiming to push the culture forward."

The album completes a triptych. Richard: "New Breed was the story of New Orleans through my father's eyes. I used his samples, his music, his cultures, his work with Chocolate Milk, his side of the family. Second Line was my mom — her interludes riddled the album with her depiction of what is meant to be a Creole woman in New Orleans. The masculine and feminine sides of King Creole had expressed themselves through them, but the story felt unfinished, like my version of the story was untold."

Her father is Frank Richard, lead singer and percussionist of the New Orleans band Chocolate Milk, and he appears here on "groove city" — her reworking of the song Chocolate Milk cut for RCA on their 1979 album Milky Way. The other guests are Big Freedia on the opening track, Anjelika "Jelly" Joseph on "chuuuuurch", Tarriona "Tank" Ball taking a spoken-word verse on "l v r", and Durand Bernarr on "baby, can we?".

Richard on the feature list: "I'm not normally a features girl, but King Creole can't build a world from scratch without help. What's beautiful about the features here — which is also true of my band and producers — is they come from people who understand the materials of the world they're from, they're people I love, and they're people who are just extraordinary at what they do." And on the record's argument: "Creole Culture is my way of saying that New Orleans culture doesn't have to live in the past to be authentic. It can be progressive. It can be global. It can be pop culture. It can look like me."

It is her first solo album since Second Line (Merge, 2021), after two collaborative records with Spencer Zahn — Pigments (2022) and Quiet in a World Full of Noise (2024), both on Merge. The first panel of the triptych, new breed (2019), was on Local Action.
