David Bowie - The Shel Talmy Recordings (CD)

The compact disc is the full edition of The Shel Talmy Recordings: 22 tracks in mono, carrying all ten of the collection's previously unheard recordings, where the LP carries six. Beyond the band sides, it holds six solo demos credited to Davie Jones and alternative vocal takes of four songs that were issued at the time. It comes in a gatefold card digipak with a 16-page booklet, and the disc reproduces the black-and-yellow Parlophone label of the 1960s. Parlophone's catalogue number, printed on the disc, is DBSTCD 65.

On August 20, 1965, Parlophone issued "You've Got A Habit Of Leaving" backed with "Baby Loves That Way" as R 5315, credited to Davy Jones, with The Lower Third left off the label and Nicky Hopkins on piano. Both sides were cut at IBC Studios in London in early July of that year. The Manish Boys' 1965 single "I Pity The Fool" had carried "Take My Tip" on its B-side, the first song Bowie wrote to be released on record.

Bowie returned to "You've Got A Habit Of Leaving" and "Baby Loves That Way" between July and October 2000, re-recording both for Toy, an album first issued on November 26, 2021 as part of the Brilliant Adventure box set.

Alec Palao, the music historian who wrote the liner notes, frames the material this way: "The sounds here should not be judged by the standards of his later career, but by the standards of what was happening in Britain at that precise point in time."
