[PREORDER] David Bowie - The Shel Talmy Recordings (Black Vinyl)

A single black LP in mono, cut down to twelve tracks from the twenty-two on the companion CD. Six of the twelve have never been released before, and all six sit on Side Two. The CD's six Davie Jones solo demos and its four alternate takes are not on this record.

The material dates from 1965, when Bowie was still David Jones and working with Shel Talmy, the American producer then making records with The Kinks and The Who. The sessions were held at IBC Studios on Portland Place in London, engineered by Glyn Johns.

Two bands play here. The Manish Boys account for "I Pity The Fool" and "Take My Tip"; Jimmy Page, then a session guitarist for hire, played on that date and brought a fuzz pedal built to his own specification. The rest is Davie Jones & The Lower Third - Denis Taylor on guitar, Graham Rivens on bass, Phil Lancaster on drums, with Bowie singing and playing harmonica, and Nicky Hopkins on keyboards. "Keep Up With The Jones" is an instrumental with Bowie on harmonica.

John Webber remastered the set in 2026 for Parlophone.
