Fireflies on a single black vinyl LP from Forty Below Records, catalog number FBR055LP, with the songs split across two sides.

Danielle Nicole made the album in her hometown of Kansas City with producer Tony Braunagel, who also plays drums and percussion. She sings and plays bass, with Brandon Miller on guitar and Jim Pugh on keyboards, and the band recorded live to analog tape. "It felt so organic and spontaneous," she has said of the sessions. Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars joins her on "Take Me Back," which she describes as "a greasy, psychedelic stomp about shedding a life you once thought you craved to become one with the earth again."

Some of these songs were slowed by the death of her brother Kris, with whom she played in Trampled Under Foot. "When my brother passed away, I was still writing a lot, but my grief kept me from completing some of these songs," she has said. "I had to push hard through the mental blocks."

Before going solo she was the bassist and lead vocalist of Trampled Under Foot alongside her brothers Kris and Nick, whose album Badlands won Contemporary Blues Album of the Year at the 2014 Blues Music Awards. Her 2018 solo album Cry No More reached No. 1 on Billboard's blues albums chart and earned a Grammy nomination, and The Love You Bleed, her 2024 album for Forty Below, also reached No. 1 on that chart.
