This LP gathers seventeen D.R.I. songs on a single record, pressed on red vinyl splattered with silver. Every track on Cleopatra's Greatest Hits was recorded between 1983 and 1987, the stretch that took the Dirty Rotten Imbeciles from the Dirty Rotten LP through Violent Pacification, Dealing with It! and Crossover.

Cleopatra first issued the compilation on CD in 2001. It was later reissued under two other names, as Dirty Rotten Hitz in 2004 and as Thrashkore Retrospektif in 2005.

Kurt Brecht and Spike Cassidy formed D.R.I. in Houston in 1982 with Eric Brecht on drums and Dennis Johnson on bass, and the band relocated to San Francisco the following year. AllMusic describes a group that started out as "a speedy, straight-ahead punk band" and "gradually mixed more elements of heavy metal into their sound," a shift the 1987 album Crossover put in its title. Cleopatra's own notes call the band "legends of hardcore thrash metal" and point to "Who Am I," "Violent Pacification" and "Commuter Man" among the highlights here.
