Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP

This is the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series edition of Curtis Counce's 1957 album, issued by Craft Recordings on October 13, 2023 under catalog number CR00389. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers in an all-analog (AAA) chain from the original tapes, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressing (QRP) and housed in a tip-on jacket.

The series is a joint program of Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds devoted to the Contemporary catalog, the Los Angeles jazz label Lester Koenig founded in 1951. Its 2023 run marked the label's 70th anniversary with seven titles, this one among them alongside records by Ornette Coleman, Art Farmer, Leroy Vinnegar and Phineas Newborn, Jr.

The album was Counce's second outing as a leader. Born in Kansas City, he reached Los Angeles in 1945 and built his name as a sideman with Shelly Manne, Clifford Brown and Stan Kenton before forming his own quintet in 1956: Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Harold Land on tenor saxophone, Carl Perkins on piano and Frank Butler on drums. Koenig produced and Roy DuNann engineered the sessions at Contemporary's studio between October 1956 and September 1957.

Craft's notes place the music between hard bop and cool jazz. The program pairs two Counce originals, "Complete" and "Counceltation," with five standards, among them Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean?" and Charlie Parker's "Big Foot," which closes the second side at just over nine minutes. The back of the jacket titles the set The Curtis Counce Group, Vol. 2, and the album was later reissued as Councelation.
