Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This edition of Wrapped Tight is part of Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series. Titles in the series are mastered by Matthew Lutthans from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and housed in tip-on gatefold jackets. The front keeps the original Impulse! artwork with its Stereo A-87 roundel, and the disc carries the orange-and-black Impulse! label.

Hawkins recorded the session at the Van Gelder studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on February 22 and March 1, 1965, with Bob Thiele producing. Impulse! issued it that year as A-87, and it was the last album released under his name as a leader during his lifetime.

The group behind him is Bill Berry and Snooky Young on trumpet, Urbie Green on trombone, Barry Harris on piano, Buddy Catlett on bass and Eddie Locke on drums. Manny Albam wrote the title track and arranged for the larger band, and Billboard's review at the time singled out those arrangements for their swing and grace.

The ten tracks run from standards to film music and one Hawkins original, "She's Fit." The label's notes trace "Intermezzo" to Heinz Provost, whose theme was used in the 1936 Swedish film of that name and in its 1939 American remake. Reviewing for AllMusic, Scott Yanow gave the album four stars and noted that it came 43 years after Hawkins first recorded with Mamie Smith's Jazz Hounds. Carter Harman, writing in Life, judged that the tenor man could still compete with the younger crowd on their own terms.

Hawkins also turns up elsewhere in the series, on Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins and on Shelly Manne's 2-3-4, and Coleman Hawkins and Confreres joined the series in 2025.
