180-Gram Vinyl, Muse Master Edition Series

Night of the Mark VII takes its name from a saxophone. Clifford Jordan was breaking in a new Selmer Mark VII tenor the night the record was made, live in Paris on March 26, 1975.

Behind him is the trio the bassist Sam Jones formed with Cedar Walton and Billy Higgins in the early 1970s and worked under the name the Magic Triangle: Walton on piano, Jones on bass, Higgins on drums. The four names are printed across the top of the jacket. The same rhythm section runs through Jordan's records of the period, several of which carry the trio's name in their titles.

Five pieces, three of them on the first side. "John Coltrane" is Bill Lee's tribute to the saxophonist, "Highest Mountain" is Jordan's own, and the first side closes with Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk." The second side holds two performances of better than ten minutes each, written by Cedar Walton and Sam Jones. The album runs a little under forty-three minutes. Stanley Ray's cover illustration is carried over from the original jacket.

Time Traveler Recordings, the archival label the producer Zev Feldman launched in 2025 in collaboration with Craft Recordings, reissues it as TT-M007 in the Muse Master Edition Series. Lacquers were cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab from the original tapes; the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Furnace Record Pressing and housed in a Stoughton tip-on jacket. The insert carries new notes by the jazz historian Willard Jenkins and photographs by Raymond Ross.
