This copy of the 15th-anniversary double LP comes in the neon-sign jacket, which Lakeshore Records lists as Drive 5. The title glows as a pink neon tube against a deep blue ground, its red wiring trailing off to the left above the words "Score by Cliff Martinez," and a line along the foot of the cover reads "A Nicolas Winding Refn Film - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Special Anniversary Edition." Both discs are gold splatter on clear, the colorway Lakeshore calls "Driver's Jacket," and across four sides the album runs a little over 70 minutes.

Refn wanted electronic music for the film, abstract at times so that the audience could see things from the Driver's perspective, and he was a particular fan of the ambient music Martinez wrote for Steven Soderbergh's Sex, Lies, and Videotape. He handed Martinez a sampling of songs he liked to work from. The resulting score leans on vintage keyboards, with cues given plainly literal titles such as "They Broke His Pelvis" and "Skull Crushing."

"Nightcall," by the French electronic musician Kavinsky with Lovefoxxx, plays over the opening credits at the suggestion of the film's editor, Mat Newman. "A Real Hero," the College and Electric Youth song in the video above, was first released by Valerie Records in January 2010. Austin Garrick took its refrain from his grandfather's description of Chesley Sullenberger after the landing of US Airways Flight 1549 as "a real human being and a real hero," and the song earned an MTV Movie Award nomination in 2012.

The score was also nominated for Best Score at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and finished runner-up for Best Music Score with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. In 2014 the BBC aired a full re-score of the film produced by Zane Lowe, with new music from artists including Chvrches, Bastille and The 1975.
