Chess 75 Series 180g Mono Black Vinyl in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This LP belongs to the Chess Records 75 Series, a run of reissues produced by Chess Records with Acoustic Sounds. Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab cut the lacquers in mono from the original analog tapes, an all-analog chain from tape to disc. Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram black vinyl, and the record ships in a tip-on gatefold jacket printed on high-grade board. The front still carries the original Chess LP 1435 catalog number and "high-fidelity" banner, along with the 1959 cover photograph of a strawberry sundae in a diner booth.

Berry Is on Top was Chuck Berry's third LP, issued by Chess in July 1959 and produced by Leonard and Phil Chess. Every track apart from the steel-guitar instrumental "Blues for Hawaiians" had already appeared on a 45, which led AllMusic's Cub Koda to call the album "almost a mini-greatest-hits package."

Side one opens with "Almost Grown," one half of the March 1959 double A-side (Chess 1722) with "Little Queenie" that reached No. 3 on the R&B chart. "Maybellene," the 1955 single that started Berry's recording career, follows two tracks later, and the side closes on "Johnny B. Goode," a No. 2 R&B and No. 8 pop hit in 1958 that NASA later placed on the Voyager Golden Record. Its original B-side, "Around and Around," turns up on side two.
