Chess Acoustic Sounds Series 180 Gram LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This edition of Back Home belongs to the Chess Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue line Chess Records built with Acoustic Sounds to mark the label's 75th anniversary. Titles in the series are remastered from the original analog tapes, cut to lacquer by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP). Chess packages each disc in a tip-on gatefold jacket printed on high-grade board.

The front of the jacket reproduces the 1970 Chess Stereo cover with its LPS-1550 mark, and the center label repeats that number in the blue Chess design. Inside, the gatefold opens onto two full-panel black-and-white photographs of Berry with his guitar.

Back Home was Berry's fourteenth studio album, issued by Chess in 1970, and its title points to his return to the label after several years on Mercury. Berry wrote all nine songs and produced the sessions at Ter Mar in Chicago, with Bob Baldori on harmonica and piano, Lafayette Leake on piano and Phil Upchurch on bass. Malcolm Chisholm engineered the original recordings.

"Tulane" opens side A and was the album's only single, released in August 1970 with "Have Mercy Judge" on the flip; that second song follows the same story through to Johnny's day in court. The Steve Gibbons Band took "Tulane" to No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart in 1977, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts recorded it for Up Your Alley in 1988. Slade covered "I'm a Rocker" on their 1979 album Return to Base.
