After School Session was Chuck Berry's first studio album, issued by Chess in May 1957 as LP-1426, only the second long-player the label had released. This mono reissue, catalog number ACHE 45291, belongs to the Chess Records Acoustic Sounds Series and is Berry's third title in it. Matthew Lutthans of The Mastering Lab remastered it from the original analog tapes, Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180 gram vinyl, and it ships in a tip-on gatefold jacket that reproduces the original Chess LP 1426 front cover, with two portraits of Berry across the inside spread.

Berry already had hits with "Maybellene" and "Roll Over Beethoven" when the album appeared, and most of what it holds had been issued on 45 first: only "Roly Poly" and "Berry Pickin'" were new to record buyers. "School Day (Ring Ring Goes The Bell)" went to No. 1 on the R&B chart and No. 3 on the pop chart in 1957, and the R&B chart also took "Too Much Monkey Business" to No. 4, "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" to No. 5, "No Money Down" to No. 8 and "Wee Wee Hours" to No. 10.

The songs were recorded between May 21, 1955 and January 21, 1957 at Universal Recording Corporation in Chicago, produced by Leonard and Phil Chess. Berry wrote every song. Johnnie Johnson and Otis Spann share the piano work, Willie Dixon plays bass, and the drummers are Fred Below, Jasper Thomas and Ebby Hardy; on "Deep Feeling," Berry plays steel guitar.
