Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180-Gram Mono LP in Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This is the Blue Note Tone Poet Series edition of Picture of Heath, a mono LP produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio directly from the original analog master tapes. It is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, California, and housed in a Stoughton Printing tip-on gatefold jacket that reproduces the Pacific Jazz PJ-18 cover. Blue Note issued it on December 2, 2022, under catalog number B0033674-01.

Blue Note launched the Tone Poet series in 2019, the label's 80th anniversary year. The label traces the series to president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters, which led him to bring in Music Matters co-founder Joe Harley, known as the Tone Poet, to choose and supervise reissues drawn from across the Blue Note family of labels.

The session took place on October 31, 1956, at Radio Recorders in Hollywood. It was the third album trumpeter Chet Baker and alto saxophonist Art Pepper recorded together that year, after The Route and Chet Baker Big Band, and the sextet adds tenor saxophonist Phil Urso, pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Curtis Counce and drummer Larance Marable, with Richard Bock producing for Pacific Jazz.

Jimmy Heath wrote five of the seven tunes: "Picture of Heath," "For Miles and Miles," "C.T.A.," "For Minors Only" and "Resonant Emotions." Pepper wrote the other two, "Minor-Yours" and "Tynan Tyme." The record first appeared as Playboys, in a sleeve modeled on Playboy magazine; Blue Note's notes say it carried that name until Hugh Hefner objected. Pacific Jazz reissued it in 1961 as Picture of Heath, after the Heath title tune, with a studio photograph of the band in place of the pin-up.
