Chakzilla on compact disc comes in a six-panel digipak with a folded poster inside. The one disc holds the full ten-song album, which runs about 33 minutes and 40 seconds, and it is issued on EarthSong and BMG. BMG's notes call it her first new music in more than seven years.

Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens in Chicago and first came to wide attention in the early 1970s as lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus. Her solo recording of "I Feel for You" reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1984. She has won eleven Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026, and in 2023 she entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the Musical Excellence Award.

Eight of the ten songs are credited to Khan, under her birth name, with Sia Furler and Greg Kurstin; Calvin Broadus Jr. joins them on "Boogie's in My Soul," and Chris Braide on "Bring the Party." Kurstin also engineered and mixed the record and plays drums, guitar, keyboards and synthesizer across it, and Emily Lazar mastered it. Sia sings background vocals throughout and takes vocal turns on "Cool U Down" and "Heart of Gold." Khan has called Sia her goddaughter; the two performed together at her Hall of Fame induction.
