Verve Vault Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is the Verve Vault Series edition of Carmen McRae's Birds of a Feather: a stereo LP cut all-analog from the original master tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Optimal. It ships in a single sleeve carrying the original artwork, which reproduces Decca's "Full Stereo" front, catalog number DL 78815 and the "Hi-Fi Decca Records" badge included, and the label's photography shows a Decca-style stereo center label on the disc.

Decca first issued the album in 1958. Every song on it references birds in some way, a brief strict enough to take in "Chicken Today and Feathers Tomorrow." Ralph Burns arranged the program and conducted the orchestra across three New York sessions on August 4, 6 and 8, 1958.

Ben Webster plays tenor saxophone throughout, credited on the original jacket only as "a tenorman," with Al Cohn adding a second tenor on six tracks. The band also includes Marky Markowitz on trumpet, Don Abney on piano and Aaron Bell on bass, with a French horn section on half the program. AllMusic's John Bush singled out Webster's solo on "Bob White," and Webster's biographer Frank Buchmann-Moller compared his playing on "Flamingo" to the "beating wings of a landing bird."
