Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in Tip-On Jacket with Obi

This is Craft Recordings' 2024 pressing of Know What I Mean? in the relaunched Original Jazz Classics Series, catalog number CR00716. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original master tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain, and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. It is housed in a tip-on jacket with an obi strip. The obi carries the session credits, the mastering and pressing notes, and a three-and-a-half-star DownBeat notice. The cover keeps the original stereo strip and Riverside logo, and the labels carry the Bill Grauer Productions, New York City imprint. The original stereo issue was Riverside RLP 9433, and the mono issue was RLP 433.

Fantasy Records started Original Jazz Classics in 1982 as a reissue line for the Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary, Pablo and related catalogs it had acquired, and the series ran to more than 850 titles. Craft announced this title in January 2024 as part of a batch of three, alongside Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers' Caravan and Ron Carter's Where?

The quartet recorded the album at Bell Sound Studios in New York on January 27, February 21 and March 13, 1961. Orrin Keepnews produced and Bill Stoddard engineered, and Riverside issued it in 1962. Adderley plays alto saxophone, and Bill Evans plays piano and wrote the arrangements. Percy Heath (bass) and Connie Kay (drums), the rhythm section of the Modern Jazz Quartet, complete the group. The sessions came just before and just after Evans recorded his trio album Explorations, and both records include Earl Zindars's "Elsa." This version of "Waltz for Debby" was only the second recording of that Evans composition. Evans wrote the title track for these sessions, and Keepnews named it after a phrase Adderley often used in conversation. A small photograph of Evans sits almost hidden among the sculptures on the cover.

The LP has the original eight-track program, four tracks per side. The alternate takes added to CD editions from 1987 onward are not included. Reviewing this pressing for Tracking Angle in February 2024, Michael Fremer singled out the Bell Sound recording, noting that Adderley's alto sits at center stage. The Penguin Guide to Jazz gave the album three stars out of four.
