On Wednesday, August 6, 1975, Can played the Théâtre Antique at Arles, the Roman amphitheatre in the Rhône valley, on a festival bill that also carried Nico and Kevin Ayers. The tape went into the Spoon Records archive and stayed there. This is its first release, and the seventh entry in the live series Irmin Schmidt has overseen for Mute and Spoon Records.

The band that night was the core quartet, with no vocalist: Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, Michael Karoli on guitar, Holger Czukay on bass and Jaki Liebezeit on drums. The set runs as six stretches of collective improvisation, titled after the fact as Arles 75 Eins through Arles 75 Sechs and spread across two discs. Mute's release notes state that the band themselves counted the Arles show among their finest.

The live series exists because Can did not repeat a set. The music was composed on stage, which makes each surviving tape a different record rather than another reading of a familiar one. Arles sits in the summer of 1975, between Soon Over Babaluma and Landed.

The package is two black LPs with a printed insert. The insert carries the sleeve notes, headed "CAN live in Arles for eternity" and set in both French and English, drawn from first-hand accounts by people who were at the show, alongside photographs taken that night. Mute released Arles 75 Sechs ahead of the album.
