Codified Marble Vinyl, Limited Edition, 2026 Remaster, New Sleeve Notes

Mute's 2026 remaster of Code, on limited-edition green and black marble vinyl the label calls Codified, with the original artwork restored, a printed inner sleeve and a two-page insert of new sleeve notes by Mat Smith.

Denis Blackham remastered it from the original tapes; he has mastered or remastered every Cabaret Voltaire album for more than twenty years. The reissue was begun in 2019 with Richard H. Kirk and finished after his death from his own notes, in consultation with Stephen Mallinder and Kirk's estate.

The album was made in 1987 at Western Works, the duo's own studio in Sheffield, with Adrian Sherwood joining for pre-production; the sessions then moved to Red Bus in London to mix. Sherwood and the band share the production credit, except on the title track, which the disc label marks as produced by Cabaret Voltaire alone. Mallinder plays bass and keyboards and sings; Kirk plays guitars, keyboards and computer-generated instrumentation. Bill Nelson adds guitar to five tracks, Mark Brydon bass to two, and Simeon Lister saxophone to two. Every composition is credited Kirk/Mallinder.

The title and lyrics of "Don't Argue" lift lines verbatim from the narration of Frank Capra's 1945 US Army film Your Job in Germany, made to brief GIs in occupied Germany.

Mallinder on the record: "This album captures a very interesting moment in time where we were moving into a technological world. Probably more than anything else Richard and I made together, CODE was a political record that we didn't have to directly articulate as political."

EMI, through Parlophone, first issued Code on 5 October 1987 as PCS 7312. It is the band's eighth studio album, between The Covenant, the Sword, and the Arm of the Lord (1985) and Groovy, Laidback and Nasty (1990). The album itself never entered the UK chart; "Don't Argue" reached number 69 and "Here to Go" number 88, per the Official Charts Company.
