Ghostly International's vinyl edition, pressed on transparent green and housed in a single-pocket jacket built around the grass-block artwork.

The record holds twelve of the album's twenty-four cues, six to a side; the remaining twelve exist only in the digital version, and the download code in the sleeve covers the complete album. That is the trade the format makes, and it is worth knowing before you choose between this and the disc.

Daniel Rosenfeld wrote the music as C418, working in Ableton Live with synthesizers including a Moog Voyager. He has said the sparse, beatless shape of it came out of what Minecraft's sound engine could handle: the denser writing he first planned would not run in the game. Ghostly issued the soundtrack physically in 2015, four years after Rosenfeld put it on Bandcamp himself.

The album reached No. 5 on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums and No. 4 on Soundtrack Albums, and the RIAA certified it gold in December 2023. In April 2025 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry, the second piece of video-game music to be selected.
