180g Black Vinyl in Tip-On Jacket with Obi Strip, Bluesville Acoustic Sounds Series

This is the Bluesville Acoustic Sounds Series edition of Brownie McGhee's Brownie's Blues, catalog number CR00984. Matthew Lutthans cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at The Mastering Lab at Blue Heaven Studios, an all-analog (AAA) chain, and the 180-gram black disc was pressed at Quality Record Pressings in partnership with Acoustic Sounds. The single LP arrives in a reproduction tip-on jacket that keeps Pete Welding's original back-cover notes, wrapped in an obi strip carrying new notes by producer and historian Scott Billington.

The album was recorded on October 6, 1960, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Rudy Van Gelder at the console and The Sound of America credited as producer, and first issued on Prestige's Bluesville label in 1962 as BVLP 1042. McGhee sings and plays guitar, his longtime partner Sonny Terry plays harmonica, and the jacket credits a second guitarist, Bennie Foster. Billington's obi note points out that the extra guitar leaves McGhee free to take single-string solos rather than hold down the full arrangement himself.

Seven of the nine songs are McGhee originals, among them "Jump, Little Children," "Lonesome Day" and "The Killin' Floor." The two covers are Memphis Slim's "Everyday I Have the Blues" and Richard M. Jones' "Trouble in Mind." Welding's liner notes trace "Little Black Engine," the song that closes Side A, to a small train running between London and Scotland that McGhee rode on a British tour.

Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, McGhee learned his finger-picking style from the Piedmont guitarist Blind Boy Fuller and first reached New York City in 1942. He and Terry were later awarded the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowship, and both men were inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
