The CD of GET MEAN holds all twelve songs on a single disc in a standard jewel case. In the band's own product photograph the running order is printed on the back tray, and the disc face circles its center with the numbers one through twelve.

Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller met at film school in Savannah, Georgia, and started the project there in 2013 as Teen Dreamz, taking the name Boy Harsher the following year; they later moved to Northampton, Massachusetts. Their catalog before this record runs through the EPs Lesser Man (2014), Pain (2015) and Country Girl (2017), the album Country Girl Uncut (2019), and The Runner, a 2022 film the duo directed, starring Kristina Esfandiari and issued with its own soundtrack album.

GET MEAN is their first release through Atlantic Records. The Line of Best Fit reports that the songs were written through the end of the pair's romantic relationship, a stretch of creative difficulty and a family loss. The band's own notes call it a redemption album.

Track four is the song in the lyric video above. Issued on August 26, 2026, "Tough Luck (When You Don't Call)" was the album's third single. Side-Line reports that Los Angeles video artist Sean McGuirk built the clip as a karaoke screen on vintage video equipment, around footage Jesse Korman shot at PropHaus in Brooklyn.
