This is Mr Bongo's vinyl reissue of Funky Super Fly, the 1974 album by vocalist and bandleader Bobby Williams. It is a single black LP housed in a tip-on sleeve, catalog number MRBLP347, with four tracks on each side. Mr Bongo issues the album on CD as well.
The arrangements are credited to Bobby Williams And His Band, with Robert Reese as producer. Mr Bongo's notes place James Brown as the clear influence and point to horn sections, guitar and bass lines built over breakbeats. The title track and "Soul Brother Party" each run as one continuous track on the album, where the 7-inch singles split them into Parts 1 and 2. Side A also carries the ballad "Morning of Love," and side B closes on "Fair Trade," an instrumental the label hears as close to a Blaxploitation soundtrack.
The record found a second audience through sampling. "Funky Superfly" is a sample source for "The Number Song" on DJ Shadow's Endtroducing..... (1996), and "Soul Brother Party" was used a year later on Coldcut's More Beats & Pieces. For this pressing Stefan Tenner cut the lacquers, and the jacket carries liner notes by Williams himself.
Evergreen Vinyl ships records with care and attention to detail, using established carriers and packaging practices designed to protect physical media in transit.
