Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP in Tip-On Jacket with Obi

This pressing belongs to Craft Recordings' Original Jazz Classics series. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio, keeping the chain all-analog, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. It arrives in a Stoughton tip-on jacket carrying the Riverside Stereo front, with the original cover design credited to Paul Bacon, Ken Braren and Harris Lewine. A gray OJC obi strip lists the catalog number CR00949, the personnel and the mastering credits, and quotes Barbara Gardner's four-star review from DownBeat. The back cover reproduces Orrin Keepnews' original liner notes.

Fantasy launched the Original Jazz Classics imprint in 1982 to reissue its jazz holdings, among them Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary and Milestone, and it went on to release more than 850 titles. Craft relaunched the series in 2023.

The session took place at Reeves Sound Studios in New York on January 13 and 14, 1960, with Jack Higgins engineering and Keepnews producing. Riverside issued it that year, in stereo as RLP 1164 and in mono as RLP 12-317. It was Timmons' first album as sole leader; his earlier Jenkins, Jordan and Timmons (1957) was a date co-led with saxophonists John Jenkins and Clifford Jordan. Sam Jones plays bass and Jimmy Cobb drums, and "Lush Life" is an unaccompanied piano solo. His second Riverside date as leader, Soul Time, was recorded that August.

Born in Philadelphia in December 1935, Timmons had worked with Kenny Dorham, Chet Baker, Sonny Stitt and Maynard Ferguson and spent a year and a half with Art Blakey before joining Cannonball Adderley's new quintet in the fall of 1959, according to Keepnews' notes.

Four of the nine pieces are Timmons originals. "Moanin'" was first recorded by Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and "This Here" first reached record on the Adderley quintet's Riverside album The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco, with Timmons in the band. "Dat Dere" and "Joy Ride" complete his writing here. The standards come from Billy Strayhorn, Comden, Green and Styne, Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hart, and Harold Arlen with Johnny Mercer; the same notes report that Timmons' friends knew this version of "My Funny Valentine" as "Funky Valentine." AllMusic rates the album four stars.
