Black Vinyl 2LP, 2026 Reissue Of The 1975 Columbia Double Album

This 2026 reissue presses The Basement Tapes on two black vinyl LPs and keeps the 24-song, four-side sequence of the original 1975 double album, as listed on Bob Dylan's US store.

Columbia first released the album on June 26, 1975. Sixteen of its songs were taped in 1967 by Dylan with four members of the Hawks, the group that became the Band, during his recovery from a July 1966 motorcycle crash: first at his Woodstock house, then in the basement of Big Pink, the West Saugerties house where Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson lived. Hudson ran the recordings on a borrowed tape recorder and microphones. Most of those songs had circulated on bootlegs for years, and this was their first official release. The other eight songs are by the Band alone, recorded between 1967 and 1975, and overdubs were added to both groups of songs in 1975, with engineer Rob Fraboni cleaning up the tapes at the Band's Shangri-La studio in Malibu.

Two of the Dylan songs carry music by members of the Band: Danko wrote the music for "This Wheel's On Fire," and Manuel composed "Tears of Rage." The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart and topped the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll for 1975; Robert Christgau, who ran the poll, wrote that it "would have been the best album of 1967, too." Reid Miles took the cover photograph in the basement of a Los Angeles YMCA, posing Dylan and the Band among characters drawn from the songs, with art direction credited to Bob Cato.
