Rhino High Fidelity Unnumbered Edition, 180g Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This is the unnumbered edition of Paranoid in Rhino High Fidelity, the label's premium vinyl reissue series. Rhino's first run of the title was a numbered edition of 5,000. This pressing drops the hand numbering and otherwise matches it: the same cut, the same heavyweight vinyl and the same package.

Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original analog stereo master tapes, keeping the chain all-analog from tape to lacquer, and Optimal Media pressed the 180-gram disc. Gray cuts and Optimal presses every title in the series, so the whole line shares one standard. The record sits in a heavyweight glossy tip-on gatefold with an obi strip. It also comes with a four-page insert of historical artifacts, photos and liner notes, including commentary from engineer Tom Allom, who worked on the original sessions.

Paranoid is Black Sabbath's second studio album. The band recorded it with producer Rodger Bain at Regent Sound and Island Studios in London over three days in June 1970, four months after their debut came out. Vertigo issued it in the UK that September, and Warner Bros. released it in the US in January 1971. This reissue keeps the US label's track titles, so side one opens with "War Pigs / Luke's Wall" and side two closes with "Jack the Stripper / Fairies Wear Boots."

The title track was written as an afterthought, when the band found themselves a song short. It went to number four on the UK Singles Chart. On "Planet Caravan," Ozzy Osbourne sings through a Leslie speaker. Paranoid was the band's only UK number-one album until 13 in 2013, and in 2017 Rolling Stone ranked it first on its list of the 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.
