Verve Vault Series 180 Gram Black Vinyl LP

This Verve Vault Series edition is an all-analog reissue, cut from the original master tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed on 180 gram black vinyl. The jacket and the red label reproduce the 1962 Smash Records stereo issue, catalog SRS 67027, down to the front-cover script that billed Mitchell as "the most exciting tenor sax in jazz."

This Is Billy Mitchell was the Detroit tenor saxophonist's first album as a bandleader, issued on Smash in 1962 after mid-1950s stints in Dizzy Gillespie's big band and Count Basie's orchestra. Jack Tracy produced the sessions, recorded in Chicago in October 1962.

Mitchell leads a sextet here: Dave Burns on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone, Billy Wallace on piano for four tracks and Clarence "Sleepy" Anderson on organ for three, with fellow Detroit natives Herman Wright on bass and Otis "Candy" Finch on drums.

Mitchell wrote the opener, "J & B." Wallace contributed "Tamra" and Melba Liston wrote "Just Waiting." The two standards are Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," written with Irving Mills and Mitchell Parish, and "You Turned the Tables on Me" by Louis Alter and Sidney Mitchell.
