Indie Exclusive Subway Token Gold Vinyl

Turnstiles on a single LP at 33 1/3 RPM, pressed on subway token gold vinyl for independent record stores. Eight tracks in their original 1976 running order, four to a side, on Columbia's red label.

Turnstiles is Billy Joel's fourth studio album, released on May 19, 1976. He wrote it after leaving Los Angeles and moving back to New York, and three of its songs reference the city.

The album was first attempted at Caribou Ranch in Colorado with Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson, the bassist and drummer from Elton John's band. Joel was dissatisfied with the results, took over as producer himself, and re-recorded the record from start to finish in New York. Those sessions were the first time Joel's own band played on one of his studio albums: Liberty DeVitto on drums, Doug Stegmeyer on bass, Russell Javors and Howie Emerson on guitars, and Richie Cannata on saxophone and clarinet.

Turnstiles reached number 122 on the Billboard 200 and is certified platinum by the RIAA. Barbra Streisand recorded "New York State Of Mind" for her 1977 album Superman.

The cover photograph was taken at the Astor Place subway station in Manhattan. Joel has said that each figure in it stands for a song on the record - the girl in headphones for "All You Wanna Do Is Dance," the wealthy couple for "I've Loved These Days."
