Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram LP, All-Analog Mastering, Tip-On Jacket With Obi

This LP belongs to Craft Recordings' 2023 relaunch of the Original Jazz Classics series, the reissue line Fantasy started in 1982 and carried past 850 titles. It arrived on July 7, 2023, in the relaunch's second batch. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes, with no digital step in the chain, and the 180-gram disc was pressed at RTI. The tip-on jacket reproduces the original Riverside artwork under Craft catalog number CR00617, and an obi strip wraps the spine.

The six performances were recorded live at the Village Vanguard in New York on June 25, 1961, by Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums. Orrin Keepnews produced and Dave Jones engineered. This was the second Riverside LP drawn from that day's sets, after Sunday at the Village Vanguard, and the fourth and final album by this trio. LaFaro died in a car accident ten days after the date. Riverside first issued the record in 1962, and Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums placed it at number 465 in its 2000 third edition.

Joe Goldberg's original liner notes are reproduced on the back of the jacket. They point out that the title track and "My Romance" first appeared on New Jazz Conceptions, Evans' first LP, as short unaccompanied piano sketches. Craft notes that Evans wrote "Waltz For Debby" for his niece in the mid-1950s. "Detour Ahead" is a Lou Carter, Herb Ellis and John Frigo song, and the second side moves from Rodgers and Hart through Leonard Bernstein's "Some Other Time" to Miles Davis' "Milestones."
