180-Gram Black Vinyl, Original Jazz Classics Series

This is Craft Recordings' Original Jazz Classics Series edition of Sunday At The Village Vanguard, catalog number CR00609. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio in an all-analog chain from the original master tapes, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. It is housed in a tip-on jacket with an obi spine wrap that reproduces the original Riverside artwork, with a Craft three-ply anti-static inner sleeve inside. The disc labels follow the Riverside stereophonic design, and the back of the jacket carries the original liner notes by Ira Gitler and producer Orrin Keepnews.

Original Jazz Classics began in 1982 under Fantasy Records as the reissue home for a catalog that included Prestige, Riverside, Milestone, Contemporary and Pablo, and over three decades it presented more than 850 albums. Craft relaunched the series with a focus on vinyl and hi-res digital audio, and this title was announced in its second batch of reissues.

Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums recorded the album live at the Village Vanguard in New York City on June 25, 1961, the closing day of a two-week engagement. The trio played five sets that afternoon and evening, and Riverside drew a second LP, Waltz for Debby, from the same tapes in 1962. It was the last time this lineup played together; LaFaro died in a car accident less than two weeks later. Evans and Keepnews chose the six selections to feature LaFaro, opening and closing with his own compositions "Gloria's Step" and "Jade Visions," and Riverside issued the record in 1961 with "Featuring Scott La Faro" on the cover. Gitler's notes identify it as Evans's first live recording.

Keepnews produced the session and Dave Jones engineered it. The cover photograph is by Donald Silverstein, and Steve Schapiro took the back-liner photograph of the trio between sets in the club's back room. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings has given the album its crown in all nine editions published since 1992, and Robert Dimery included it in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die in 2005.
