Verve Vault Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl 2LP

This edition belongs to the Verve Vault Series, Verve's all-analog reissue program. The lacquers were cut from the original master tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound, and the album is pressed on 180-gram vinyl across two LPs, the same double-LP form in which Verve first issued it in 1982 as VE2-2545. The jacket carries the original painted cover, with its "Newly discovered sessions from 1967 recorded at the Village Vanguard" line, and the disc labels reproduce the Verve label copy of that first issue.

The music comes from two nights, August 17 and 18, 1967, at the Village Vanguard in New York, six years after the Riverside sets that became Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby. Evans led a trio with Eddie Gomez on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, with Helen Keane producing. Despite the title, nothing here was recorded anywhere near the West Coast; the name comes from the opening track, the DeSylva, Meyer and Jolson song from the Broadway show Bombo.

The tapes sat unissued for fifteen years. Verve released the set in 1982, two years after Evans' death, and it reached number 12 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart in 1983. The program mixes standards such as "Stella by Starlight," "In a Sentimental Mood" and Monk's "'Round Midnight" with Bacharach and David's "Alfie" and three Evans originals: "Turn Out the Stars," "G Waltz" and "Very Early."
