Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram LP

This pressing belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, a reissue program from Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds marking 70 years of Contemporary Records, and Jazz Giant was among the first six titles announced for it. Bernie Grundman, a former Contemporary employee, mastered it from the original tapes in an all-analog chain, and Quality Record Pressings (QRP) pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. It is housed in a Stoughton Old Style tip-on jacket whose front carries the Stereo Records imprint, "In Association with Contemporary Records," and catalog number CR00384.

First released in 1958, Jazz Giant was produced by Lester Koenig and recorded by Roy DuNann at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles over four dates between June 1957 and April 1958. Carter plays alto saxophone and trumpet and wrote the arrangements, joined by Ben Webster on tenor saxophone, Frank Rosolino on trombone, André Previn or Jimmy Rowles on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Two of the seven pieces, A Walkin' Thing and How Can You Lose, are Carter's own compositions.

The back cover reprints Nat Hentoff's liner notes, dated September 6, 1958, and credits the cover photograph of Carter to William Claxton. At AllMusic, Scott Yanow called the album a "particularly strong septet session."
