Single CD in Standard Jewel Case

This is Beck's eighth studio album on compact disc. Geffen Records issued it on September 24, 2002, in a standard jewel case with a clear tray. The CD came out with four different covers. Each version has its own digital artwork by Jeremy Blake on the disc and in the booklet, and a different lyric fragment printed under the tray. This disc has the original twelve-song sequence. "Ship in the Bottle", the one finished track left off the album, was added only to the Japanese edition and to later remasters.

Beck wrote most of the songs in a single week after a nine-year relationship ended, then set them aside for a while before returning to them in 2001. He reunited with Nigel Godrich, who had produced Mutations, and the sessions started at Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles on March 6, 2002. Much of the album was recorded live, and the bells and strings were added afterward. Track 8 and the strings on track 2 were recorded at Record One. The string arrangements are by Beck's father, David Campbell. The band included Roger Joseph Manning Jr., Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Jason Falkner, James Gadson and cellist Suzie Katayama. "It's All in Your Mind" is a new recording of a song Beck first released in 1995. The album takes its name from a line in "Little One".

Sea Change reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and No. 20 in the UK, and the RIAA certified it gold in March 2005. Rolling Stone named it the best album of 2002 and later placed it at No. 436 on its 2012 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Beck's 2014 album Morning Phase was announced as a companion piece and used the same musicians, apart from Godrich.
