Single LP on Black Vinyl with Double-Sided 12-Inch Insert

This is the 2016 US vinyl reissue of Odelay, catalog number B0025124-01, issued by DGC with Universal Music Enterprises and given a US street date of December 2, 2016. It arrived in the album's 20th anniversary year, as part of UMe's return of Beck's DGC and Geffen catalog to vinyl, a campaign that also brought back Sea Change and Guero. All thirteen album tracks sit on one black LP, seven on side A and six on side B, and the jacket holds a double-sided 12-inch insert carrying artwork and the album credits.

Odelay was Beck's fifth studio album, first released by DGC on June 18, 1996. Most of it was recorded in 1995 at the Dust Brothers' home studio in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, a small room filled with the records that supplied many of its samples. Earlier sessions with Bong Load producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf yielded the closing track, "Ramshackle", and Mario Caldato Jr. and Brian Paulson produced "Minus".

The album peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 and had sold 2.3 million copies in the US by July 2008, making it Beck's most successful album at that point. At the 39th Annual Grammy Awards in 1997 it won Best Alternative Music Album, "Where It's At" won Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, and the record was Beck's first to be nominated for Album of the Year. Rolling Stone, the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll and NME's critics each named it the year's best album.

The cover photograph shows a Komondor, a Hungarian breed with a heavy corded coat, clearing a hurdle; canine photographer Joan Ludwig shot it for the July 1977 issue of the American Kennel Club's gazette. The title is a phonetic rendering of the Mexican slang greeting "órale".
