It is Bea Miller's third studio album, released through Republic Records eight years after Aurora. Her Republic deal was announced on May 5, 2026, and "depressed on the internet" followed three days later as her first release for the label, ahead of the singles "born to lose" and "drunk enough."

The album was made in close collaboration with Justin Tranter and the producers Oak Felder, Shawn Wasabi and Dan Crean, and "drunk enough" is credited to Miller, Tranter, Felder and Crean. The music moves between pop, alternative and R&B.

Miller came to public attention on the second season of The X Factor in the US, finishing ninth at age 13, and her 2015 debut album Not an Apology reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200. The title comes from a lyric: "I think it's funny to say, I'm Mr Peaked in High School, because then the rest of the lyric is, But I never even went, because I didn't go to high school," she told Stage Right Secrets. Of the opening track she has said, "'born to lose' is me making fun of myself before anyone else gets the chance."
