Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180g LP

This is the vinyl edition of The Poll Winners in Craft Recordings' Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, issued June 10, 2022 as part of the label's celebration of seventy years of Contemporary Records. Bernie Grundman mastered it all-analog from the original tapes. The disc is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and housed in a Stoughton old-style tip-on jacket.

The jacket and labels carry the Stereo Records imprint, "in association with Contemporary Records," under catalog number CR00386, and the runouts are etched. The back cover prints Nat Hentoff's original liner notes, dated August 2, 1957, beside the session's technical data, and credits the cover photograph to William Claxton.

Kessel plays guitar, Ray Brown bass and Shelly Manne drums. The three recorded the set on March 18 and 19, 1957 at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles, with Lester Koenig producing and Roy DuNann engineering. The name was less a boast than a tally: Hentoff's notes record that all three won the Down Beat, Metronome and Playboy jazz polls for 1956.

It was the first of five albums the trio made together for Contemporary, followed in 1958 by The Poll Winners Ride Again!. The program pairs standards such as "On Green Dolphin Street" and "It Could Happen to You" with Duke Jordan's "Jordu," Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll" and Kessel's own "Minor Mood." AllMusic's Ronnie D. Lankford Jr. calls it "a classic guitar album in a small-group setting."

Kessel came to the session as a former member of the Oscar Peterson trio, and was rated the top guitarist in the Esquire, DownBeat and Playboy polls between 1947 and 1960. In the 1960s he became a first-call studio player with the session group known as the Wrecking Crew.
