Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP

This is the Craft Recordings edition of Smack Up in the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, catalog number CR00706. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers from the original analog tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain, and Quality Record Pressings (QRP) pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. The jacket is a tip-on, printed by Stoughton Printing. The back cover carries Leonard Feather's sleeve notes, dated January 26, 1961, beside Contemporary's technical data for the session.

Art Pepper led the quintet on alto saxophone, with Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Pete Jolly on piano, Jimmy Bond on bass and Frank Butler on drums. The session was recorded on October 24 and 25, 1960 at Contemporary Records in Los Angeles, with Roy DuNann engineering and Lester Koenig producing. SoundStage! Xperience's review of this reissue counts it as Pepper's fourth LP for Koenig's Contemporary label.

Every tune on the record was written by a saxophonist. Harold Land wrote the title track, Buddy Collette "A Bit of Basie," Benny Carter "How Can You Lose," Duane Tatro "Maybe Next Year" and Ornette Coleman "Tears Inside." Pepper's own "Las Cuevas de Mario" is a blues in 5/4. CD editions added two takes of Jack Montrose's "Solid Citizens"; this LP keeps the original six-track program, three tunes to a side.
