Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series edition of Gettin' Together, catalog number CR00713. The series is a joint program of Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds that returns albums from the Contemporary catalog to vinyl, begun to mark seventy years of the label, and every title is supervised by Acoustic Sounds CEO Chad Kassem. For this pressing Bernie Grundman cut all-analog (AAA) lacquers from the original master tapes, Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and it is housed in a tip-on jacket printed by Stoughton Printing.

The jacket reproduces the 1960 front cover, including the "Jimmie" spelling of drummer Jimmy Cobb's name, and the black-and-gold stereo label lists the composer under each title.

Pepper, on alto and tenor saxophone, recorded the album on February 29, 1960, at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles, with Lester Koenig producing; it was his third album for the label. Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, the Miles Davis rhythm section of the time, are joined by trumpeter Conte Candoli, and Martin Williams' original liner notes call the record "a sort of sequel" to Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section. The program sets three Pepper originals, "Bijou the Poodle," "Diane" and the title track, beside Chambers' "Whims of Chambers," Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-A-Ning" and two standards. Craft's series announcement quotes Jazzwise on the "angularity" of "Bijou the Poodle."
