Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Stereo LP

This is the stereo edition of Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section from the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue line Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds began to mark 70 years of Lester Koenig's Los Angeles jazz label. Bernie Grundman mastered it all-analog from the original tapes, Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and it is housed in a Stoughton Old Style tip-on jacket carrying the Stereo Records CR00382 imprint.

The back of the jacket reproduces Koenig's original notes, dated April 2, 1957, along with William Claxton's cover portrait and Cecil Charles's photographs from the session. SoundStage! Ultra named this pressing its Recording of the Month in April 2023.

Pepper made the album at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles on January 19, 1957, with Koenig producing and Roy DuNann engineering. His band for the afternoon was pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, three-fifths of the Miles Davis quintet of the day, and Craft's announcement calls the record Pepper's Contemporary debut. Koenig's notes say Pepper learned of the date only that morning, that "Waltz Me Blues" and "Red Pepper Blues" were composed and worked out on the spot, and that the whole album was finished within about five hours.

The Penguin Jazz Guide called the session "a masterpiece," and earlier Penguin Guide editions placed it in their Core Collection. Becky Byrkit, writing for the All Music Guide, called it "a diamond of recorded jazz history."
