Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This LP opened the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue program Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds launched to mark 70 years of the Los Angeles jazz label. It was issued on May 13, 2022 as catalog number CR00383, with all-analog mastering by Bernie Grundman from the original tapes. Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and it ships in a Stoughton old-style tip-on jacket. The series is supervised by Acoustic Sounds CEO Chad Kassem, and Audiophile Review's report on this pressing notes audiophile-grade plastic inner sleeves.

The jacket follows the stereo Contemporary original: Roger Marshutz's cover portrait of Pepper, design by Guidi/Tri-Arts, the front carrying the short title Art Pepper + Eleven and the back the full "Modern Jazz Classics" heading. The back cover reprints Nat Hentoff's liner notes, dated October 21, 1959, together with the label's original technical data panel.

The music was recorded at Contemporary's Los Angeles studio over three sessions on March 14, March 28 and May 12, 1959, produced by Lester Koenig with sound by Roy DuNann and Howard Holzer. Marty Paich arranged and conducted twelve modern jazz standards by Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, Gerry Mulligan, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Giuffre and others. Of the several dates Pepper and Paich made together in 1959, this is the only one under Pepper's name, and Contemporary first issued it in February 1960 as M3568 in mono and S7568 in stereo. Craft's notes tie the album to the sound of Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool sessions, which also open with Denzil Best's "Move."

Pepper, born in Gardena, California in 1925, had placed second only to Charlie Parker among alto saxophonists in DownBeat's 1952 readers poll. Here he plays alto, tenor and clarinet in front of trumpeters Pete Candoli, Al Porcino and Jack Sheldon, trombonist Dick Nash, Bob Enevoldsen on valve trombone and tenor, Vince De Rosa on French horn, saxophonists Herb Geller, Bud Shank, Charlie Kennedy, Bill Perkins, Richie Kamuca and Med Flory, pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Joe Mondragon and drummer Mel Lewis. Hentoff's notes point out that Pepper takes the clarinet solo on "Anthropology" and plays lead tenor on "Four Brothers," which follows Giuffre's 1947 arrangement for Woody Herman almost note for note.
