Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP

This is catalog number CR00605 in the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue program Craft Recordings runs with Acoustic Sounds. Bernie Grundman, a GRAMMY-winning engineer who once worked at Contemporary Records himself, cut the lacquers from the original master tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain. The record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and housed in a Stoughton old-style tip-on jacket.

Portrait of Art Farmer was the trumpeter's 1958 debut for Contemporary, first issued as S 7027. Producer Nat Hentoff supervised two sessions in New York City on April 19 and May 1, 1958, with Hank Jones on piano, Farmer's twin brother Addison Farmer on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. The dates caught Farmer between Horace Silver's band and Gerry Mulligan's pianoless quartet, and The Penguin Guide to Jazz later named the album in its suggested Core Collection.

Farmer wrote three of the eight pieces: the blues "Back in the Cage" and "Earth," which open and close the program, and the up-tempo "And Now...," built on the changes of "I Got Rhythm." The rest come from Benny Golson ("Stablemates"), George Russell ("Nita"), Ray Noble ("The Very Thought of You"), Dietz and Schwartz ("By Myself") and Lane and Lerner ("Too Late Now"). Farmer plays a cup mute on "The Very Thought of You" and "By Myself." This LP keeps the original eight-track running order, so "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," added on the later Original Jazz Classics reissue, does not appear here.

The Arts Fuse noted that the stereo mix places the rhythm section in the right channel and Farmer alone in the left. Hi-Fi News reviewed this pressing in its March 2024 audiophile vinyl column.
