Blue Note Essentials 140g Black Vinyl LP

This LP is one of the five titles that opened Blue Note Essentials. The label announced the series on April 30, 2026, for International Jazz Day, to introduce classic albums to listeners new to jazz. The first group arrived together on July 17, 2026, and paired Moanin' with Chet Baker Sings, Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage, Horace Silver's Song for My Father and Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder.

Every Essentials title is mastered from high-resolution digital masters and pressed on 140-gram vinyl. This one is black, in a single jacket that keeps the BST-84003 catalog number on the front and carries the Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series sticker in the lower corner. Blue Note runs the line alongside its Classic Vinyl Series, the all-analog 180-gram editions mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes.

The music was recorded on October 30, 1958, by Rudy Van Gelder at his studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing. It was Art Blakey's first Blue Note album in several years, and he led Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass. The LP first appeared under the band's name and became known as Moanin' once Timmons' opening track caught on.

Golson wrote the remaining originals, and this is the only U.S. album on which he appears with the Messengers. "Are You Real" sets him and Morgan in two-part writing, "Along Came Betty" is the longer-lined, lyrical piece, "The Drum Thunder Suite" gives Blakey a three-movement feature, and "Blues March" draws on the New Orleans marching bands. The one standard, "Come Rain or Come Shine," closes the record at a brisk tempo.

Both the album and its title-track single are in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Critic Scott Yanow listed it among his "17 Essential Hard Bop Recordings," and Jon Hendricks later set lyrics to "Moanin'" for Lambert, Hendricks & Ross.
