Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, 180g Black Vinyl LP

This is the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series pressing of Like Someone In Love: a stereo, all-analog LP mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany. The jacket reproduces the original stereo front cover, BST 84245 and BLP 4245 catalog numbers included, and the disc carries the blue-and-white Blue Note label. The runouts are etched.

In August 1960 the Jazz Messengers went into Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on the 7th and again on the 14th, with Alfred Lion producing. Those two dates supplied a pair of companion albums. A Night in Tunisia came out first; Like Someone In Love stayed in the vault until Blue Note issued it in 1967.

The band is the quintet that took shape earlier in 1960, when Wayne Shorter joined Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt behind Art Blakey for The Big Beat. The same five men also made The Freedom Rider and The Witch Doctor for the label.

Side one opens with the Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen standard that gives the album its name, then turns to Lee Morgan's "Johnny's Blue." Side two belongs to Shorter, with three of his originals: "Noise in the Attic," "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On" and "Giantis." Blue Note's own notes call "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On" a ballad and the other two hard-charging. Two of the Shorter pieces, "Noise in the Attic" and "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On," come from the August 7 date; the title track, "Johnny's Blue" and "Giantis" were cut on August 14.
