Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram LP in a Tip-On Jacket with Obi

This is Craft Recordings' March 1, 2024 vinyl reissue of Caravan, catalog number CR00717, issued in the label's Original Jazz Classics series. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio in an all-analog (AAA) chain, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. The tip-on jacket reproduces the original Riverside artwork, Chuck Stewart's cover photograph of Blakey at the kit included, and the obi strip carries the lineup, the session credits and DownBeat's four-star rating of the original LP.

The Original Jazz Classics line began at Fantasy Records in 1982 and ran to more than 850 titles before Craft relaunched it in 2023.

Caravan was taped at Plaza Sound Studios in New York on October 23 and 24, 1962, with Orrin Keepnews producing and Ray Fowler engineering. Riverside issued it in 1963 as Blakey's first album for the label, which he had signed with that October. Blakey leads the sextet from the drums alongside Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Cedar Walton on piano and Reggie Workman on bass; the back cover credits Hubbard as appearing courtesy of ABC-Paramount Records. In the group's discography it falls between Three Blind Mice and Ugetsu, the live set recorded at Birdland later in 1963.

The six tracks split between standards and band originals. The title track is the Ellington, Mills and Tizol tune, "Skylark" belongs to Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer, and "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" is a song Frank Sinatra had popularized, as Craft's announcement points out. Shorter wrote "Sweet 'n' Sour" and "This Is for Albert," and Hubbard wrote "Thermo." Ira Gitler's original liner notes, reprinted on the back cover, record that "This Is for Albert" is dedicated to Bud Powell; Shorter told Gitler that Blakey and other contemporaries of Powell insisted the pianist's real first name was Albert.
