Mullumbimby Blue Vinyl

This limited edition repress returns The Closest Thing To Silence to print on Mullumbimby Blue vinyl, as a single LP. International Anthem first released the album on February 2, 2024, when its vinyl run was a limited edition of 444 copies on Silent Gray vinyl. It is a collaboration between Ariel Kalma, the French-born, Australia-based composer, and Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer.

The record began in August 2022, when Kalma was invited to take part in BBC Radio 3's Late Junction series of collaborations, which pairs artists who have not worked together before. He suggested Chiu and Honer, two International Anthem artists he had never met, whose duo debut Recordings from the Åland Islands had come out a few months earlier. Chiu had long cited Kalma as a major influence on his approach to electronic composition.

The three passed tracks back and forth, each adding to or editing the music before returning it, until they had the roughly twenty minutes the program called for. The Late Junction broadcast aired in September 2022, and the trio kept expanding the material for several months afterward. In International Anthem's description, the method was born in improvisation and realized through collage-based editing: improvised playing from each musician is cut together with recordings Kalma made at GRM in the 1970s, along with audio notes of Kalma explaining his ideas. The title comes from Kalma's statement that "music is the closest thing to silence."

Kalma released Osmose in 1978. RVNG Intl. later gathered his early work on An Evolutionary Music: Original Recordings 1972-1979 in 2014 and paired him with Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe for FRKWYS Vol. 12: We Know Each Other Somehow. Kalma died in 2025.
