Verve By Request Series 180-Gram LP

This LP belongs to Verve By Request, the reissue series Verve Records and UMe run in partnership with Third Man Records. For this edition the music was transferred from the analog tapes and remastered, then pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit. The lacquers were cut at Sterling Sound, with the RKS initials of engineer Ryan K. Smith in the runout of both sides, and Ken Druker supervised the reissue. The record comes in a gatefold jacket carrying the original Impulse! cover and its AS-9262 catalog number.

Kwanza first appeared on Impulse! in 1974, but the sessions behind it date from September 1968 to August 1969, when Shepp recorded with four different ensembles at RCA Studios and National Recording Studios in New York. Bob Thiele and Ed Michel are credited as producers. Shepp wrote three of the five pieces; trombonist Grachan Moncur III contributed "New Africa," and "Bakai" is a Cal Massey composition.

The lineup changes from session to session. "Back Back" puts Bernard Purdie on drums behind a horn section of Jimmy Owens, Moncur, James Spaulding and Charles Davis, with Dave Burrell on organ. Leon Thomas sings lead on "Spoo Pee Doo," and "Slow Drag" brings in Woody Shaw, Cecil Payne, Cedar Walton, Wilbur Ware and Joe Chambers. Reviewing the album for AllMusic, Thom Jurek wrote that it is "certainly one of his fine ones," if not one of Shepp's better known recordings.
