Verve Vault Series 180g Black Vinyl LP

This pressing was one of the two titles that opened Verve Vault, the all-analog reissue series Verve Label Group and UMe announced in August 2025 and began issuing on October 10, 2025. The series draws on the Verve, Impulse! and Mercury catalogs. For this LP, Ryan K. Smith cut the lacquers at Sterling Sound from the original analog tapes, and the record was pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Optimal. The gatefold jacket reproduces the original Verve stereo sleeve, catalog number V6-8547.

The album first appeared on Verve in 1963. It was Jobim's first album under his own name and his debut as a bandleader in the United States, produced by Creed Taylor and recorded in New York. Its twelve instrumentals were arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman, the beginning of a lifelong musical partnership between the two.

Jobim plays both piano and guitar here. In a 1988 Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, he recalled American producers resisting the piano because it spoiled the picture of a Latin man and his guitar, which is the picture the front cover carries. George Duvivier plays bass, Edison Machado drums and Leo Wright flute, with Jimmy Cleveland's trombone on four tracks and a string section on eight.

The album entered the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2007 Rolling Stone Brasil placed it at No. 58 on its list of the 100 greatest Brazilian records. Down Beat's Pete Welding said the bossa nova movement would have been justified had it produced only this record.
