Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series 180g Stereo LP

This is the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series edition of Spring, issued on August 18, 2023. It is an all-analog stereo pressing: Kevin Gray mastered it from the original master tapes, and the record is pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal in Germany. The jacket keeps the original stereo catalog number, 84216, and the original credit to Anthony Williams, the name he recorded under for Blue Note in the 1960s. Reid Miles designed that jacket.

Spring was Williams' second album as a leader for the label, following his 1964 debut, Life Time. He recorded it at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on August 12, 1965, at the age of 19, with Alfred Lion producing. Blue Note issued it in 1966 as BST 84216. All five compositions are his.

The session brought together two tenor saxophonists, Wayne Shorter and Sam Rivers, with pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Gary Peacock, and the line-up changes from track to track. The full quintet plays only on "From Before" and "Tee." Hancock sits out "Extras," Shorter sits out "Love Song," and "Echo" is Williams alone at the drums.

Williams was still a teenager when he played on Blue Note sessions including Eric Dolphy's Out To Lunch, Andrew Hill's Point Of Departure and Herbie Hancock's Empyrean Isles.
