Blue Note Tone Poet Series Stereo LP on 180g Black Vinyl in a Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This is the Blue Note Tone Poet Series edition of Life Time, the first album Anthony Williams recorded as a leader. Joe Harley produced the reissue, Kevin Gray mastered it in stereo at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes and cut the lacquers, and Record Technology Inc. (RTI) pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. It is housed in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket and ships sealed in a perforated outer bag carrying a hype sticker.

The series began with Blue Note president Don Was, whose admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters led him to bring in Joe Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to choose and supervise reissues from across the Blue Note family of labels.

Williams was 18 and already the drummer in the Miles Davis Quintet when he cut Life Time at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on August 21 and 24, 1964, with Alfred Lion producing. Every composition is his. Side A holds the two-part suite "Two Pieces of One," with Sam Rivers on tenor saxophone and two bassists, Gary Peacock and Richard Davis. Side B opens with "Tomorrow Afternoon" for Williams, Rivers and Peacock. On "Memory" Williams moves to timpani, woodblocks, maracas and triangle alongside Herbie Hancock on piano and Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone and marimba, and the closing "Barb's Song to the Wizard" is a duet for Hancock and Ron Carter on which the leader does not play at all. Hancock has recalled that Williams taught him the tunes by picking out the piano parts with one finger from each hand.

The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings lists the album in its suggested core collection, and Scott Yanow's AllMusic review calls it "a very strong debut for the masterful drummer." The gatefold reproduces Francis Wolff's session photography, and the front keeps Reid Miles's original cover design, crediting the artist as Anthony Williams, the name he used on his early Blue Note records.
