Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram LP

This LP belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue program Craft Recordings runs with Acoustic Sounds under the supervision of Acoustic Sounds CEO Chad Kassem. West Side Story opened the series' 2023 slate of seven Contemporary titles. Bernie Grundman, a GRAMMY-winning engineer who once worked for Contemporary himself, cut the lacquers from the original master tapes in an all-analog chain. Quality Record Pressings pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl, and it is housed in a Stoughton old-style tip-on jacket. Craft notes that this is the album's first vinyl pressing in more than three decades.

The jacket keeps the original Contemporary layout: catalog number CR00390 and the STEREO banner across the top, and Ben Shahn's 1939 tempera painting "Handball," held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, on the front. The back reproduces Lester Koenig's liner notes, dated April 5, 1960, beside the label's technical data panel, which lists AKG C-12 microphones, a multi-channel Ampex tape recorder and a Westrex "Stereo Disk" cutting head.

Previn, drummer Shelly Manne and bassist Red Mitchell recorded the album on August 24 and 25, 1959 at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles, with Roy DuNann engineering and Koenig producing. Previn chose eight songs from the Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim score and rearranged them for the trio, and Koenig's notes quote him on why improvising on a show tune means altering its harmonies and sometimes its construction. Contemporary first issued the album in 1960.

It was the last of the Broadway albums Previn and Manne made for Contemporary, a run that began with My Fair Lady in 1956. The two alternated as leaders across the series: Manne's name fronted Li'l Abner and Bells Are Ringing, while the "His Pals" banner also covers Pal Joey and Gigi. Koenig founded Contemporary in 1951, and Acoustic Sounds presents this series as part of Craft's 70th-anniversary celebration of the label.
